HUNGER ACTION MONTH, MOBILE MARKET AND MORE – SEPTEMBER 5
HUNGER ACTION MONTH
September is Hunger Action Month, and as more people turn to food banks for help during the COVID-19 crisis, a community-wide response to hunger is more important than ever. You can take action against hunger today by donating to help our neighbors in need. Our friends at Gesa Credit Union are matching all donations up to $20,000 during Hunger Action Month, so your gift will have twice the impact. MOBILE MARKET
Many thanks to our friends from the Washington Beef Community, Rosauers and KREM 2 for a successful “Beef Counts” wrap-up event this week! Second Harvest’s Mobile Market distribution at Northeast Community Center in Spokane on Wednesday provided food, including local beef, to 300 families. You can watch KREM 2’s coverage of the event here.
PASCO HUNGER SOLUTION CENTER
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt life as we know it. While we prefer our Pasco Hunger Solution Center to be bustling with volunteers, we’re not able to host these activities there through the end of the year. The health and safety of our volunteers is a priority, and we’re at our capacity for space with the National Guard members we have deployed in Pasco until mid-December. We value our volunteers so much, though, and we encourage you to click here for other ways to get involved right now. We are so eager to welcome back our volunteers and thank you for your understanding during these challenging times.
ARMY NATIONAL GUARD REENLISTMENT
Second Harvest is honored to be working alongside dedicated National Guard members deployed to our Spokane and Pasco locations in response to the COVID-19 crisis. On Thursday, Sept. 3, our Spokane team had the pleasure of celebrating the reenlistment of U.S. Army National Guard Sgt. Christopher Shubert. Sgt. Shubert has been serving for 23 years, and he signed on for six more. Sgt. Shubert’s military career was inspired by his father, who retired from the Navy Reserves. “I feel a sense of commitment and duty to the community, and I love serving the public,” he said. Sgt. Shubert, who is from St. Maries, Idaho, and serves with the 1-161 Infantry Regiment, has been deployed for COVID-19 crisis response since April. He’s been serving at Second Harvest for a month.
